Steel Drivin’ Man

Topps 2011 Triple Threads

I’m trying to wrap my head around how Topps issues a relic card of someone who does not exist. Of course in legend old steel driver John raced a steam drill at Big Bend Tunnel. Before the steam drill could beat him down, he hammered his fool self to death. Thus man makes a last noble, albeit futile, stand against industrialization.

Well, maybe he’s a myth, at least a few have speculated that the legend is based on a real man. History professor [Scott Nelson](http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/18/books/18grim.html) argues that Henry was a former Union soldier, imprisoned for theft, that was forced to blast tunnels through the Allegheny Mountains for the Chesapeake & Ohio railroad.

Keeping my eyes open for the Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill cards.
